What Is Unity?

Unity's Five Basic Principles

  1. God is the source and creator of all. There is no other enduring power. God is good and present everywhere.
  2. We are spiritual beings, created in God's image. The spirit of God lives within each person; therefore, all people are inherently good.
  3. We create our life experiences through our way of thinking.
  4. There is power in affirmative prayer, which we believe increases our awareness of (and connection to) God.
  5. Knowledge of these spiritual principles is not enough. We must live them.

What We Believe:

God is Spirit, the loving source of all that is. God is the one power, all good, everywhere present, all wisdom. God is divine energy, continually creating, expressing and sustaining all creation. In God, we live and move and have our being. In Unity, some other ways we speak of God are Life, Light, Love, Substance, Principle, Law and Universal Mind.

The Nature of Humankind

We are each individual, external expressions of God. Our essential nature is divine and therefore inherently good. Our purpose is to express our divine potential as realized and demonstrated by Jesus and other master teachers. The more we awaken to our divine nature, the more fully God expresses in and through our lives.

Our Teachings
  •     Heaven is not a place, but a state of consciousness; we create our own heaven and hell here and now.
  •     We all have an innate capacity to know God through direct experience.
  •     The “Christ” is that part of God that is in every person. There is a spark of divinity within all people, just as there was in Jesus.
  •     Prayer works.
  •     We are here to set a positive example and be a role model for others.
  •     We are here to make the world a better place.

We believe that Jesus expressed his divine potential and sought to show humankind how to express ours as well. We see Jesus as a master teacher of universal truths and as our Way Shower. In Unity, we use the term Christ to mean the divinity in humankind. Jesus is the great example of the Christ in expression.

The Bible

Unity founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore studied the Bible as history and allegory and interpreted it as a metaphysical representation of humankind’s evolutionary journey toward spiritual awakening. In addition, Unity recognizes the Bible is a complex collection of writings complied over many centuries. We honor the writings as reflecting the understanding and inspiration of the writers at the time they were written. The Bible continues to be a valuable spiritual resource for us.

Prayer and Meditation

Affirmative prayer is the highest form of creative thought. It includes the release of counterproductive, negative thoughts, as well as holding in mind statements of spiritual truth. Though meditation, we experience the presence of God. Prayer and meditation heighten our awareness and thereby transform our lives.

Youth and Family Ministry

Unity recognizes that there are many expressions of family life. All are welcome. Unity creates an affirming environment that fosters positive self-image, personal responsibility and unconditional love and acceptance.

· Beholds all children as whole and perfect expressions of God.
· Empowers children to fulfill their divine potential
· Teaches children to meditate and pray.
· Invites children to experience a loving God.
· Unity provides a strong spiritual foundation for children’s lives.

About The Unity Wings

The Unity wings symbol, the winged globe, appears in many Unity publications. This ancient symbol has been recreated in many variations, from the older pen and ink drawing you see above, to wood carvings, stained glass, and modernized drawings.

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, adopted this artistic creation as a Christian symbol as early as 1891 in the first issue of Unity Magazine. In 1923 he gave this explanation of the Unity wings:
"The winged globe or sun disc...represents the relation existing between Spirit, soul and body. Soul (the wings) gives wings to the body (the disc). Spirit is the (invisible) enveloping Principle, like the atmosphere in which both soul and body exist, and from which they draw their original inspiration."
~ Charles Fillmore, in Unity magazine, April 1923

In 1956, he further explained the symbolism of the winged globe this way:
It is an ancient Egyptian symbol, but it is found in various forms in the religions of other races. It represents the relation existing between Spirit, soul, and body. Soul gives wings to body. Spirit is the enveloping principle, like the atmosphere in which both soul and body exist, and from which they draw their original inspiration.

The winged globe is also a symbol of the earth and its soul. The earth has soul, as have its products of every description. All exist in the ether, the anima mundi, the divine mother. When people of the earth lift up their thoughts to God, and the Animus Dei or directive Spirit, then the planet takes wings into a higher radiation of universal life.

As man develops spiritual consciousness, he attains the realization of the soul as the wings of the body. Back of the Soul is Spirit, which quickens and energizes the soul; that is, gives the soul wings. Artists paint their angels with wings representing in this way their freedom from physical fetters. But the soul does not have wings like a bird. The life activity of the soul is quickened by Spirit until it rises above the thought of matter and floats free in the ether of the fourth dimension, which Jesus called the kingdom of the heavens.
~ Charles Fillmore, from the Unity publication "Good Business"

Unity Worldwide Ministries (formerly known as Association of Unity Churches International), which serves member ministries with administrative support and materials, used a variation on the Unity wings theme for its logo - a seagull and circle:
"The seagull flying in the center circle symbolizes the lifting of the spirit of humankind in freedom, forever enfolded within the infinite circle of God's eternal love."

It adopted a new logo in 2011, which incorporates a stylized suggestion of wings:
